Mr. Peter Scott

Peter Scott is a practicing veterinary Surgeon who graduated from Liverpool University in 1976, based in Hampshire since 1978. He was awarded an MSc in Aquatic Veterinary Studies from Stirling University in 1978. In 1991 was recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in both 'Fish Health & Production' and 'Zoo & Wildlife Medicine'. He has been an Examiner for RCVS Certificate and Diploma in Zoological Medicine over 6 years. He was granted a Fellowship of the RCVS in Psittacine Medicine in 1997.

He has acted the professional adviser to several companies ranging from the Laboratory of the Government Chemist to Disney and Warner Bros. He was responsible for the veterinary care of the '101 Dalmatians' and the '102 Dalmatians'.

In 1999 he led DETR review of the Zoo Licensing Act 1981, which generated the structure of the current UK zoo standards. He was President of BVZS in 1992-94, and served on its Council for over 20 years.

He worked in international zoo consultancy from 1984-88, and has had his own practice since 1988. He has been a Local Veterinary Inspector (LVI) for over 25 years including several years as an LVI dealing with a commercial avian quarantine - in 2005 he was a member of the Defra team which reviewed avian quarantine and produced 'the Dimmock report'.

His current interests include:

  • Trustee of the ZEBRA Foundation
  • Chief Veterinary officer and co-founder of Performing Animals Welfare Standards International (PAWSI) which is working closely with Defra on the Animal Welfare Bill.
  • In 2006 he joined the England Implementation Group (EIG) to work particularly on companion animal aspects
