Dr. David Lamb

Dr. David Lamb is a philosopher of science and an ethicist.

He has taught in the University of Maryland, Uni

versity of Kent, the Open University, Southampton University, and the University of Brighton and was Head of the Philosophy Department in Manchester and now is Hon Reader in Bioethics for the University of Birmingham.

David has published 12 books, six edited collections, and over sixty academic papers. For several years he was the editor of the Avebury Series in Philosophy. His contribution to the Philosophy of Science has focused on frontier science where he has published widely on Bio-astronomy and the logic of scientific discovery.He has also combined research in the Philosophy of Science with Ethics and has pioneered work in the medical sciences on the ethics of organ transplantation and the definition of brainstem death. For several years he was the editor of the Philosophy of Science journal, Explorations in Knowledge,and has served as a member of several editorial boards of academic journals,including Philosophy of Management, Nursing Philosophy, Respublica,and Appraisal. He is a member of the Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association, and is a member of the Ethics Council for MarwellZoo.

David continues his research in the history of philosophy where he has specialized inthe ancient Greeks and nineteenth century German philosophy. He was co-founder of the Hegel Society of Great Britain.

His teaching experience reveals a commitment to applied philosophy, and he has taught and contributed to courses on ethics to midwives, nurses, gynaecologists, surgeons,physicists, social scientists, media professionals, members of the US Navy, Anglican bishops, hospital chaplains, vets and inmates of maximum security prisons. His international experience includes membership of international bodies and advisory panels as well as lecturing visits to Brazil, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, and Poland where he has presented material on medical ethics.

For over ten years he contributed to the Animal Welfare Ethics and Law course which was jointly taught between the Universities of Birmingham and Cambridge. He is currently teaching animal welfare ethics at the University of Southampton.

In addition, he is a keen owner and trainer of Newfoundland dogs, where his activities include breed showing, working and water trials, dog dancing and competitive obedience.
