Rev. Anthony L. Birbeck
Tony Birbeck (MBE, MA, FRSA) served on the Farm Animal Welfare Council, 1980-1995, being involved in various working groups. He has been a member of the British Veterinary Association’s Ethics & Welfare Group (formerly the Ethics Committee) since 1994 and of the Veterinary Nurses’ Council of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons since 2005. He was the BVA’s Wooldridge Memorial Lecturer in 1988, “Animal Welfare – a shared responsibility” and was appointed MBE in 1990 “for services to farm animal welfare”. He is a member of the Animal Welfare, Science, Ethics and Law Veterinary Association (AWSELVA).
He has been ordained in the Church of England since 1960 and from 1978 worked as a management consultant in the field of teamwork and organisation development. Now retired he lives in Somerset, is married with grown-up children, grandchildren and a West Highland White terrier which contributes significantly to Tony’s welfare.
